Teaching Resources

There are many thousands of resources out there for teaching and learning about sustainability education.

In 2015, independent researchers asked teachers to rank the best education for sustainability sites which they use and would recommend to colleagues. Here is a summary of the list with further additions that we find useful. 

ABC Splash

Over 3000 videos, games and resources mapped to the Australian Curriculum


ARKive Education

Bring the wild to your classroom with ARKive Education! Education resources for 5-18 year olds can be used to teach a range of curriculum subjects including science, geography, English and art. Packed full of links to amazing wildlife photos, videos and fact files, each education resource includes classroom presentations, activities and teachers’ notes.


Atlas of Living Australia

There are Classroom Activities that use the Atlas of Living Australia that align with the Australian Curriculum. There are activities available for all ages from Foundation through Year 12.


Australian Research Institute for Environment and Sustainability (ARIES)

A selection of videos from around the world to educate, engage, inspire, perplex, enlighten, delight and stimulate debate on all things to do with sustainable development. 


Australian World Heritage Places Education Program 

An interactive education program featuring Australia's World Heritage Places has been developed for students in years 5 - 10 which focuses on World Heritage values and Australia's 18 World Heritage places. 


BirdLife Australia

BirdLife Australia staff and volunteers know and love birds. They have access to training and resources to help them guide your discovery of birds in their natural habitat. The education programs are friendly, hands-on activities where sharing knowledge and experiences is emphasised.


Classroom Antarctica

Classroom Antarctica is a comprehensive online teaching resource produced by the Australian Antarctic Division, aimed at grades 5 to 8.


Cool Australia

We bring sustainability into the heart of the curriculum by incorporating themes such as Energy, Water, Waste and Biodiversity into learning activities and units of work across the entire curriculum.


CSIRO Sustainable Futures 

Sustainable Futures is an educational program that combines the latest in climate science with education in sustainability. This program was formerly known as CarbonKids, and is suitable for schools to use with students in years 3 – 9. 


Global Education 

Teacher resources to encourage a global perspective across the curriculum.


Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority

Beyond the beach and below the waves, there are some amazing things to discover in the Great Barrier Reef. 


Junior Landcare

Resources to encourage more schools to better understand where their food comes from and participate in Landcare activities such as creating school gardens and building a closer connection with the land.


Murray Darling Basin Authority

A range of Australian Curriculum linked lesson plans, videos and games, including a free interactive river health investigation program.



Digital resources for teachers and students mapped to the Australian Curriculum.


Switched on Schools

A range of resources produced by the Australian Youth Climate Coalition to engage students with climate change, providing detail and project guides for high school students to run campaigns across food, biodiversity, waste, transport, energy and climate justice.


TES Australia 

Share and download maths worksheets, primary lesson plans and kids' activities to help teach general capabilities and the cross-curriculum priorities of the Australian curriculum.
